An exhibition of Dong Ho folk paintings will take place in Hanoi and the northern province of Bac Ninh from October 31 to November 2.
Over 100 paintings, including restored and new creations bycontemporary artisans, will feature popular images such as a brood of chickens,a herd of pigs that symbolise prosperity, a chubby child, or national heroes,among others.
On November 1, an international seminar discussing theprotection and upholding of Dong Ho folk paintings in contemporary life willalso be held in Bac Ninh.
The event will afford domestic and foreign artisans andexperts a chance to share experience in preserving the craft of folk paintingsas well as intangible cultural heritage values./.
In the old days, Dong Ho paintings were used as decorations at every home during the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). The folk paintings have become part of Vietnamese life through generations.
Vietnam will compile a dossier on the Vietnamese folk art of Dong Ho painting to submit to UNESCO for recognition.
The National Cultural Heritage Council will appraise dossiers on the Vietnamese folk art of Dong Ho painting later this year, then complete them before submitting to the Prime Minister.
