Since 2015, V.League 1 teams Song Lam Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Quang Ninh and Ha Noi have failed to get past the AFC Cup group stage, while other regional teams have performed well in the AFC Champions League, two key competitions for tanking points.
In the last two years, Thai teams have entered the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League, while in the AFC Cup, representatives of Myanmar have reached the round of 16 four times and the Philippines have twice played in the round of 16.
