The Vietnamese men’s football team competing in the SEA Games 30 are up to first place in Group B following a 2-1 win over Indonesia in their third match of the ongoing competition in the Philippines on December 1.
By adding an additional three points to their total, Vietnam are now top of Group B with nine points, in addition to a goal difference of +12.
A win in one of their remaining two fixtures will all but seal a spot in the semi-finals of the competition.
Following the dramatic loss, Indonesia have fallen to third place in Group B with a total of six points and a goal difference of +3.
The result means that they must beat both Laos and Brunei in their remaining fixtures in order to have a chance of qualifying for the next round. In addition, the Indonesian team also need to score as many goals as possible in order to rival the goal difference of both Vietnam and Thailand in the event that three teams finish the group tied on points.
To have a chance of making the semi-finals Indonesia must finish the group with a total of 12 point, whilst simultaneously hoping that the match between Vietnam and Thailand goes in their favour.
The most beneficial result for Indonesia would be for Vietnam to either win or draw against Thailand. In that scenario, it is the possible for Indonesia to leapfrog the Thai team and qualify from the group.
If Thailand were to win against Vietnam, then goal differences would decide which team goes through.
At present, Thailand sit on the same number of points as Indonesia but are one place above them in second due to a superior goal difference. VOV
