Covid-19 vaccinations begin in Vietnam

On the morning of March 8, the first Vietnamese were injected with Covid-19 vaccine at four places:

The Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases in HCM City, the Health Center of Hai Duong Province and Kim Thanh District Medical Center in Hai Duong.

The vaccination started at 8am. Nearly 300 health workers who directly treat Covid-19 patients were the first who were vaccinated.

Three Deputy Ministers of Health – Mr. Tran Van Thuan, Mr. Nguyen Truong Son and Mr. Do Xuan Tuyen – were present at the vaccination sites for monitoring.

Each person received 1 dose of 0.5 ml. The second dose will be injected in 3 months. The person had to stay at the vaccination site for 30 minutes and monitored at home for the first 24 hours.

Vietnam has received 117,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine. The Ministry of Health delivered 71,000 doses to the Centers for Disease Control in 13 Covid-19-hit provinces and cities, 30,000 doses to the Ministry of Defense, and 5,200 doses to 21 medical facilities treating Covid-19 patients.

This year, Vietnam plans to inject at least 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, the largest immunization campaign in the country ever.

This morning, the first 151 people were vaccinated in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Duong. In the afternoon, 130 people were vaccinated in Hanoi and HCM City.

Ms. Rana Flower, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF)’s representative in Vietnam, said the agency had contacted 10 international airlines to transport vaccines for free to 92 poor and low-income countries participating in the COVAX Facility alliance. Vietnam is one of the member countries of COVAX. When Vietnam meets the requirements, COVAX will deliver 1.2 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in March and 2.8 million doses in April.

Dr. Kidong Park, Chief Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam, said that AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine used in Vietnam was licensed and manufactured in Korea.

This vaccine has undergone a very rigorous research and testing process, ensuring safety, and approved by WHO for use in an emergency epidemic situation. This is the biggest vaccination campaign in human history.

Worldwide, Covid-19 vaccine is in short supply, said Dr. Park, although all countries want their people to be vaccinated, but the number of vaccines is still very limited.

In the context of limited vaccines, WHO very much welcomes the Vietnamese government's direction of giving priority vaccination to priority groups based on risk assessment, said Park.

The WHO representative also emphasized that, although the vaccine has been tested to meet safe vaccination, this is the first time the world has produced a vaccine in just one year. He emphasized the need to have follow-up after 48 hours of vaccination as well as follow-up at home.

In Hai Duong, 80 people in the high-risk group were vaccinated first, including 50 people at the Hai Duong City Medical Center and 30 people at Kim Thanh District Health Center.

Ho Chi Minh City started to vaccinate at 9:30am. Doctor Du Le Thanh Xuan, from the Rehabilitation Ward of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases of Ho Chi Minh City was the first to be vaccinated.

In Hanoi, Mr. Truong Van Truong, a staff of the Emergency Ward was one of the first who were vaccinated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Dr. Pham Thi Nguyet Quyen, from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, was the second person to be vaccinated this morning.

In Hanoi, at 7:50 a.m., Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan was present at the vaccination site of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Dr. Vu Minh Dien, Deputy Director of the Center for Disease Control and Vaccination of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that in the first phase of vaccination, 420 medical workers of his hospital will receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

On March 8, the first 100 medical staff of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases were vaccinated. The remaining 320 staff members will be vaccinated tomorrow.
