"A mouse wedding", a famous painting of the Dong Ho Folk Painting village.

The project is expected to build a wooden exhibition house and a painting’s process demonstration area, service area, etc. It is expected to be executed from 2018 to 2020.

Earlier, Bac Ninh province People’s Committee has a plan to compile a dossier on the Vietnam folk art of Dong Ho painting in a bid to secure UNESCO recognition as the intangible cultural heritage. The move is aimed at safeguarding this centuries old handicraft and has received endorsement from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The UNESCO recognition is expected to have a significant impact on the preservation and promotion of Vietnamese traditional values as well as in improving communities’ awareness in the protection of such values.

Dong Ho painting originated in Dong Ho Village in Thuan Thanh district of the northern province of Bac Ninh. For centuries, the paintings were used as precious decorations to celebrate the Tet festival. People bought the paintings to hang on their walls for a year, which are then replaced with new ones when a new year comes.

Dong Ho painting was inscribed in the list of national intangible cultural heritages by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in December 2012.
