Vietnam presides over UNSC session on Yemen, Colombia hinh anh 1

During the session, the organisation adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) in Yemen and listened to a report on activities of the UN mission overseeing the peace agreement in Colombia.

The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2505extending the mandate of the UNMHA until July 15.

The UNMHA was established by the UN SecurityCouncil under Resolution 2452 on January 16, 2019, with the main task ofoverseeing a ceasefire and the troop redeployment in Yemen’s Hodeidah city andcoordinating UN efforts to help the parties implement the Hodeidah Agreement.

At the session, the Security Council alsolistened to Carlos Ruiz Massieu, the UN Secretary-General’s SpecialRepresentative for Colombia and head of the UN Verification Mission in thecountry, delivering the Secretary-General’s report on Colombia’s situation, themission’s activities over the last three months and proposals submitted to thecouncil.

Representing Vietnam – President of the UNSecurity Council in January, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’sPermanent Mission to the UN, spoke highly of the commitments and efforts by theColombian Government and relevant parties over the past three years since thesigning of a peace agreement.

Vietnam asked them to give the top priority toensuring security and development for all Colombian people, including warveterans. It also called on the international community to increase support forthe Colombian Government in such important fields as improving law enforcementcapacity; replacing illicit crops; preventing illegal economic activities,crimes and violence; and reclaiming mine-contaminated areas.

The country holds that it is necessary to stepup measures for developing economy, boosting social cohesion, and developingrural areas, housing, education and employment to sustain the strides obtainedso far, Quy said.

The UN Verification Mission in Colombia was setup under Resolution 2366 of the UN Security Council in 2017./.VNA
