In the last three years, the Saigon Hi-tech Park R&D Center (SHTP Labs), with support of foreign specialists, has successfully developed MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) products that serve the development of smart urban areas.

The pressure sensor to monitor water levels developed by the center was used at eight sites in 2018 and three more sites this year.

“If tested successfully, this type of sensor will be deployed in a large scale, 80 sites, ” said Ngo Vo Ke Thanh, director of SHTP Labs. Prior to that, the HCMC People’s Committee assigned SHPT to implement the program on developing microelectromechanical industry in 2017-2020.

“Our sensor system has a certificate of conformity with standards from the General Directorate of Environment for commercialization. As such, the product can attend the bidding of domestic public investment projects on developing smart urban areas."

According to Le Bich Loan, acting head of the HCMC Hi-tech Park Management Board, the development potential of MEMS and sensors in IoT apps is great and can solve existing challenges.

“The Australian organization is developing artificial heart valves from nanomaterials. This is the cooperation that we are implementing this year and next year,” Thanh said.

The demand for nanomaterials and sensors for biomedical applications in Vietnam is huge. Most of the products used in Vietnam are imports.

Many cooperation deals have also been agreed to recently to mobilize domestic intelligence in developing hi-tech devices for use for smart urban areas.

SHTP Labs, for example, has recently cooperated with MEMS/NEMS (MPH) Laboratory and National Center for Technological Progress (NACENTECH) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and he R&D Center at Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park to connect the two hi-tech parks for MEMS technology development and human resource development projects.

SHTP Labs said domestically developed products have reached the business market.

The center has also developed a moist heat sensor. SHTP Labs is joining forces with the HCMC Automation Association to distribute products. In the first half of 2019, it received orders from some enterprises with contract value of VND5-7 billion.

Thanh revealed that in 2019, the HCMC Science & Technology Department and SHTP Labs will sign a contract with the Ministry of Public Security to make a pH sensor.
