The 14 patients returned to Quang Nam and Da Nang on board four flights from the Republic of Korea and the United States, according to the central province of Quang Nam’s Department of Health.

The department sent the patients’ samples to the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang for carrying out genome sequencing, with the results coming back positive for the Omicron variant.

Among the 14 cases, eight were on board flight VN99 from the US to Da Nang on December 24, whilst three were on VN417 flight from the RoK on December 24, two were on VN417 flight on December 23, and one was on QH9451 flight from the RoK on December 21.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam immediately asked Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airlines, Da Nang Airport and the Quang Nam Centre for Disease Control to make a list of passengers on these flights for epidemiological investigations.

Previously, an entrant returning from the UK was confirmed by the Ministry of Health on December 28 to be the first Omicron case recorded in Vietnam.
