This is the first place in Da Nang to pilot the use of drones to monitor the observance of social distancing measures.

On August 31, 15 drones were used over 13 wards in Hai Chau district, focusing on alleys. The drones were provided for free by Da Nang Development team and some volunteers. Each drone can fly for about 25 minutes before needing a change of batteries.

Tran Huu Duc Nhat, head of Da Nang Development Team, said the drones are good for observing small alleys. The device also emits sounds to let people know. They immediately transmit images of people who break the rules to the District People's Committee for immediate handling.

Party Secretary of Hai Chau District, Mr. Vu Quang Hung, told VietNamNet that in the coming time the district will use drones at night, detecting people going out through body temperature sensors.

According to Hung, once the local government officially permits the use of drones, Hai Chau district will better use drones to make people strictly adhere to the rules. The drones will also be added with speakers to broadcast warnings if violators are detected.

The move was the local authority’s effort in tightening measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 after nearly two weeks of implementing social distancing. Violations such as mass gatherings have been reported in small alleys.

Drone operators are well equipped with knowledge of handling situations and had technique, there would be no problem using the drones in smaller areas.

Drones will transmit live images to local leaders, so that they can easily detect violators, especially those in red zones who intentionally went out during social distancing.

This is one of the solutions to combat the pandemic when the city requires people ‘to stay where they are.'
