Doctors try to save seriously ill Covid-19-infected children

Hundreds of Covid-infected kids are being treated at Children's Hospital 2 in HCM City.

Doctor Do Chau Viet, Head of Infection Ward of Children's Hospital 2, says the hospital is treating more than 200 covid-19 child patients. There are 30 severe cases, requiring high-flow oxygen and 6 critical cases who need mechanical ventilation. As many as 11 children have died of Covid-19. Severe cases are children with obesity, cancer, chronic lung disease, traumatic brain injury, kidney failure, heart failure.

In the Covid-19 recovery ward of the Children's Hospital 2, there are currently six child patients, including a 13-year-old patient who is obese and the rest have underlying diseases such as cancer, cerebral palsy, kidney failure, pneumonia...

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh Thuy is the mother of a 22-month-old boy who is being treated in the hospital. Thuy has just divorced and is taking care of four children alone. The youngest son was born with a congenital heart disease and cerebral palsy and contracted Covid-19. She has to go to the hospital to take care of him.

“My son has been here for seven days. Doctors said my baby is getting better. He no longer suffers from sepsis and his lungs are improved,” said Thuy.

Another mother, Nguyen Thi Lon, says that both her and her husband contracted Covid-19, and then her baby. The boy has been with a ventilator for eight days. The baby's blood test results are fine, but the lungs have not improved much. "I'm very scared. I can only pray for my son to get through this difficult period," Lon says.

Hoang Thanh Nguyen said that his wife was found to be infected with Covid-19 when she gave birth at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital. After giving birth, she was transferred to Tu Du Hospital for isolation and treatment. She has recovered from the disease and has returned home. The infected baby was transferred to Children's Hospital 2 for treatment for seven days.

According to Dr Viet, the hospital currently provides treatment for both children and their parents who are taking care of the children and also contracted Covid-19.

Doctor Viet said that every day about 40-50 child patients are discharged from the hospital. Children's Hospital 2 has treated more than 1,000 Covid-19 patients.
