Dao Thi Hai, 51, who lives in Le Chan District in the northern city of Hai Phong, was caught in Hai Duong’s Tu Ky District on Monday after the police searched her car, vietnamplus.vn reported.

The car, which was being driven by her son, contained packages of heroin hidden inside two rice sacks and a backpack.

The bricks weighed a total of 10.5 kilogrammes.

At the police station, Hai admitted that she had received the heroin from a man she did not know earlier on the same day.

The man had hired her to transport the heroin from Thai Binh Province to another person in Hai Phong City.

Without telling her son, Hai agreed to the deal for a wage of VND20 million (US$854).

Hai has four criminal records that include drug use, gambling, and neglect to denounce criminals.

Hai is now under temporary custody while relevant agencies complete documents for criminal proceedings against her.
