What educational model does Vietnam need in the 4.0 era?



What will 4.0 education be like? A dry teacher with binary code and rigid formulas, or a humorous and inspiring guide with lots of stories to share? The future depends on innovations of education, and Vietnamese education must not be behind the times.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released a report to assess the readiness for the 4.0 industry revolution. In the report, Vietnam, with low indices in education, science and technology, is listed among the countries which are not ready for the revolution.

In the context of the 4.0 industry era, education cannot operate with 1.0 technology. In the digital age, classrooms must not limit themselves to analog walls.

Vietnam only has a 4.9 on a 10-point scale for readiness for the 4.0 revolution. Despite the high PISA, it still ranks 90th/100 in Technology and Innovation; 92nd/100 in technology platform, 77th/100 in creative capacity; and 70th/100 on Human Resources.

 


In fact, 4.0 industry is the issue of biggest concern in Vietnam today. Many people can now talk about the new terminologies such as IoT, Big Data, cloud computing, blockchain, machine learning and AI.

Vietnam’s education sector has undergone many reforms with big resources, but it still fumbles for an educational philosophy of its own.

Four steps in the innovation process

Vietnam has undergone four education models over the last 50 years of development – traditional, orientation, liberal and modern.

The traditional model focuses on providing academic knowledge to students. With one-way teaching method, this model attaches much importance to teaching content as input while the teacher plays a central role in the class.

According to the American Institute of Educational Research (1960), traditional classes only meet 5 – 25 percent of the learning pyramid's capacity. Students only remember 5 percent of content when listening to a lecture, 10 percent when listening to a lecture combining with reading textbooks, and 20 percent when using audio-visual equipment.

Orientation model is the schooling model under the project on fundamentally renovating education, implemented since 2018. Its nature is output-oriented education, access to capacity to develop learners' qualities.

Under the liberal model, Vietnam applied VNEN (Vietnam Escuela Nueva), which focuses on student-centered learning, demonstrating the trend in modern education in the world.

The fourth model is the most modern, with strategic changes. Discrete in-depth knowledge will be replaced with integrated knowledge. Students’ abilities will be assessed through their learning process.

Every child has potential. Modern education will guide the development of each student and personalize the learning of each student through different ways.
