Many new airports are expected to be built in Vietnam

With Document No.1061/VPCP-CP dated February 18, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh asked the Ministry of Transport (MoT) to quicken the scheme on attracting private investment in airport infrastructure.

He asked the MoT to consider the consistency with relevant rules; assess problems in regulations related to investment activities, management, and operation of airports, as well as capital mobilisation; the possibilities of attracting private investment; possible impacts on security and national defence; and difficulties in implementation and development.

The Deputy PM also requested the MoT to report to the prime minister within February.

Vietnam currently has 22 airports, nine of which are international. The country is currently also developing the Long Thanh International Airport.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed the MoT to build Tien Lang International Airport as part of the national airport system development plan for 2021-2030.

According to the plan submitted to the government by the MoT last November, Vietnam would have 28 airports by 2030 with a total capacity of 278 million passengers per year.

Six new airports would be built by 2030 in Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Son La, Quang Tri, Binh Thuan, and Dong Nai provinces. Another domestic airport in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang would also be built by 2050.

Haiphong proposal for second airport approved

PM Pham Minh Chinh has just approved a proposal from Haiphong authorities on developing Tien Lang Airport, which would be its second international airport following Cat Bi, in order to serve the city's socio-economic development.

Private investors will have more options to invest in aviation infrastructure, which has been dominated by state-owned enterprises.
