The milestone marks the first time that a Vietnamese team has progressed to the play-off round of the Olympic games and comes following a routine 1-0 win over Myanmar in Group A of the third qualifying round of matches played on February 6 in the Republic of Korea (RoK).
In his letter of congratulations, Minister Thien expressed his appreciation for the team's determination and bravery shown throughout the tie and stated his wish to see the squad maintain their health whilst wishing them good luck for future tournaments.
He recognised the team worked hard to overcome many challenges, especially in terms of the very cold weather conditions faced in the RoK.
Thien also went on to praise the efforts put in by the team’s head coach, the coaching staff, the doctors, and each of the players, which brought joy to Vietnamese football supporters following the Lunar New Year.
The Vietnamese team recorded a 1-0 win over Myanmar with Ngan Thi Van Su getting on the scoresheet in the 62nd minute with the result seeing the team progress to the play-off round as one of two best teams in Group A due to Myanmar losing both of their matches.
Up next for the Vietnamese team is a fixture against host nation the RoK in the final match of Group A on February 9. VOV
