Le Xuan Son, editor-in-chief of Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper, also head of the event organising board, revealed the news, saying: “This is a very sensitive period, when the whole country has been spending much time and effort to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

“That’s why though we have prepared carefully for the event, the organising board decided to postpone the contest,” he said.

“The board will then decide how the registration process and other activities will take place according to the situation.”

“The undefined time is the biggest trouble of this year’s contest, I know,” he said.

Son added that the trouble has been shared by the whole society.

“The only thing we can do now is trying to prepare further for the contest, which will be organised when the situation gets better,” he said.

The 18th national contest’s rounds had been planned to take place in three regions between May and August.

The contest, which was first named Miss Tien Phong Newspaper Contest, was the first national-level beauty contest in Vietnam hosted by Tien Phong newspaper since 1988.

Voting and award ceremony of the 2020 Cong hien (Devotion) Music Awards will be cancelled due to complicated development of the COVID-19 outbreak, announced the organisers on March 12.

The annual event is held by Vietnam News Agency’s The Thao & Van Hoa (Sports and Culture) newspaper.

Initially, the voting was slated for March 11 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the award ceremony, for March 21 in HCM City.

Ballots will be sent to reporters via emails on March 19 and must be sent back by two days later. This will be the first time online voting has been applied in the 15-year history of the prestigious awards.

The newspaper will present the awards to winners of the nine categories at its HCM City-based office on March 25.

The annual Devotion Music Awards began in 2004 to promote Vietnamese music and honour artists with significant contributions to the industry.

Meanwhile, the Standing Board of the Party Committee of Hai Phong city also cancelled the Flamboyant Flower Festival 2020 and the gathering marking the 65th anniversary of the city’s Liberation Day (May 13) for fear of the epidemic.

The committee decided to suspend preparations for the presentation of gifts to local households on the occasion of the Liberation Day.

All the funding initially allocated for those activities and other financial sources will be prioritised for COVID-19 prevention and control in the city. — VNS/VNA/VietNamNet
