After enjoying an advantage by holding the white pawn, Liem (Elo rating 2709 and the world’s No.28) controlled the tie throughout and went on to enjoy an impressive victory over world’s No.13 Duda (Elo rating 2760), who was beaten after 48 moves.

As the nation’s best chess player, Liem also won in the seventh match over world’s No.9 player Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan (Elo rating 2767), whilst he was held a draw with the world’s No.6 player Aronian of the United States (Elo rating 2772).

After participating in the competition for two days, Liem ranked ninth place with 11 points.

Moving forward, the local player will face off against a strong rival in the form of Carlsen of Norway (Elo rating 2865) in the third day of competition.

Airthings Masters represents the first tournament of the grand series 2022 Champion Chess Tour, with the event being held with 16 players, six of whom are among the world's top 10.

Moving forward, eight players will advance to the knockout stage of the competition.

The prize pool for this event is US$150,000, with the champion pocketing a total of US$25,000. In addition, a player will receive US$750 for a win and US$250 for a draw.

Each player will be given just 15 minutes per match, with 10 seconds added following each move.

The tournament is scheduled to last until February 26.
