There are about 7,000 Vietnamese people living, working and studying in Ukraine. About 200 people have been helped by the Vietnamese Embassy and Vietnamese community in Ukraine to evacuate from the war zone as of March 1.

“Currently, the Embassy continues to gather needs of Vietnamese people so that it can carry out appropriate plans. There are currently about 7,000 Vietnamese people living, working and studying in Ukraine and they have not suffered from any damage,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement on March 1.

She said as soon as the conflict occurred, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately carried out the work of citizen protection, by directing the Vietnamese Embassy in Ukraine to issue recommendations and safety guidance for Vietnamese nationals.

The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs set up a communication channel with Vietnamese associations in Ukraine to stay updated on their situation and give them safety guidance while requesting associations in nearby countries to prepare for helping Vietnamese people in Ukraine.

Vietnam has also requested authorities of the relevant parties to create a “safe corridor” for Vietnamese people to evacuate from conflict areas. It has called on agencies of the United Nations and the host countries to help provide the conditions necessary for citizen safety and evacuation.

Vietnam Airlines has developed six flight plans to rescue Vietnamese citizens in Ukraine with routes to a number of cities in neighboring countries. Its planes will fly directly from Hanoi to pick up Vietnamese citizens at the airports of these countries.

The six proposed pick-up points for Vietnamese citizens in Ukraine in order of priority are Warsaw (Poland), Bucharest (Romania), Budapest (Hungary), Bratislava (Slovakia), Moscow (Russia) and Minsk (Belarus).

Currently, the entire airspace of Ukraine and part of the southwestern part of Russia have been temporarily closed to civilian aircraft. Therefore, Vietnamese citizens must go to the areas where they are allowed to fly and are safe, and then Vietnamese air carriers will pick them up.

In addition to the six destinations suggested by Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways also proposed an additional route to Prague (Czech Republic) to pick up Vietnamese citizens.

Vietjet Air has also sent a document to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam saying that it is ready in terms of manpower and aircraft to carry out flights to pick up Vietnamese citizens in Ukraine under the direction and arrangement of the authorities.

The airline also confirmed that it will mobilize the newly imported wide-body A330 aircraft to help bring overseas Vietnamese back home. Vietjet is working with the authorities to concretize the flight plan.

On February 28, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam directed Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways to prepare aircraft, pilots and flight attendants and report on plans to operate flights to Ukraine before March 2.

On February 26, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also signed a dispatch on the protection of Vietnamese citizens and legal entities in Ukraine.

The dispatch, sent to ministers, heads of ministerial-level agencies and agencies under the Government, and Chairpersons of People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities, said since February 24, the armed conflict in Ukraine has spread in a fast and complicated manner, directly threatening the life safety and assets of people and businesses, including that of around 7,000 Vietnamese living in Ukraine, mainly in Kharkiv, Odesa and Kyiv.

In such a situation, one of the top concerns of the Party, State, Government and Prime Minister is to ensure the highest security and safety of lives, assets and legitimate interests of Vietnamese citizens and legal entities in Ukraine and related areas, said the document.
