In 2018, at the launch of new products, Apple ‘declared the death’ of iPhone X. The model had the shortest lifespan of the manufacturer as it ‘lived’ for only one year.

Apple did the same thing with XS, XS Max and 7 Plus at the event launching iPhone 11 held recently.

All four models are no longer available at Apple’s online store. However, in Vietnam, the models are among the bestsellers.

Until iPhone 11 Pro Max was introduced, XS Max had been the most expensive model of Apple. At the moment when it was sold for the first time, the model received controversial comments because of high selling prices. The 512 GB version was offered at the high price of VND44 million.

However, after price cuts and sale promotion programs, the sales of XS Max have become stable. According to GfK, iPhone XS Max 64 GB was the best selling high-end model in July, with 16.5 percent of market share.

“Xs Max is the bestseller among iPhone products at our chain. When the next-generation of iPhone arrives in Vietnam, the selling price of Xs Max will be better,” said Nguyen Viet Anh, deputy CEO of FPT Shop.

Genuine iPhone XS Max 64 GB is sold at VND30 million at big authorized resellers. The price would be lower, VND27.5 million at smaller chains.

Meanwhile, used products distributed by private shops are priced at VND20.5 million only. The price level is equal to iPhone 11 being offered by some private shops.

Some owners of private shops said users still preferred buying XS Max instead of waiting for iPhone 11.

According to Minh Tuan, the owner of a private shop in HCMC, the selling price of iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are relatively high, so the buyers of old models with low prices remain unaffected.

"Those who will spend VND30 million waver between iPhone 11 and iPhone XS Max. However, many of them choose iPhone XS Max. It is a high-end phone after all,” he said.

Meanwhile, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone X remain the key products of Apple in Vietnam. GfK reported that iPhone X has ‘desirable’ sales compared with the other models of the same brand in H1 2019.

“iPhone X has a design not too different from iPhone XS, but it is cheaper, and it can attract users,” said Nguyen Huy Tan at a retail chain.
