Workers sort waste at Khanh Son landfill in Danang City. Danang City will spend an estimated VND8.54 trillion on investment projects to classify and recycle solid household waste

Under the plan aimed at enforcing the Danang People's Council’s Resolution 204 on the management of solid waste from daily activities citywide, the city’s budget will account for VND1.93 trillion of the total cost.

By 2025, all the districts and communes in the city are expected to ensure residents separate their own garbage, whereas all industrial areas, business and production facilities, organizations and agencies will complete the task on site.

The targeted percentage of solid household waste that can be recycled and reused is at least 12% in 2020 and 15% by 2025, under the plan.

In addition, the plan targets collecting and treating up to 95% of solid household waste and ensuring that all residential and urban areas have garbage collection points and waste transfer stations that meet technical standards.

As for waste treatment, the burial of solid waste at dumpsites will be stopped by 2020 as the method negatively affects the environment.

Apart from upgrading some facilities to effectively treat waste from the Khanh Son landfill in Lien Chieu District, many more solid waste treatment plants are planned.

The Danang government also set regulations on waste management, banning littering in public places and asking enterprises and residents to join environmental cleanup activities.

In addition, the municipal government also called for minimizing solid waste from daily activities and rejecting single-use plastic items, aside from encouraging the application of information technology to waste management.

Currently, waste collection and treatment consist of three main steps: residents separate household waste at home, representatives of environmental protection companies collect the waste, and the waste is transferred to the Khanh Son landfill.

To ensure efficiency in waste separation, garbage trucks should be designed with many compartments to contain the various types of garbage.

At present, though many residents are separating waste at home, garbage collection trucks only have a single-section body, which discourages residents and renders waste separation programs ineffective and meaningless.
