Trucks prevented from entering Nam Son dumping site on December 23

The move which started on December 23 showed their opposition to the sluggish compensation payments for site clearance after their land was taken.

Earlier, local authorities pledged to spend VND3.4 trillion (USD147 million) relocating households that live within a radius of 500 metres around the landfill.

However, to date, they have not yet been compensated.

Nguyen Huu Tien, general director of Urban Environment Company (Urenco), said the blockade had led to rubbish being piled up in the city. As a result, Urenco have had to temporarily transport the rubbish to Xuan Son Dump in Son Tay Town.

Meanwhile, waste from some districts such as Ha Dong, Long Bien, Hoang Mai and Dong Anh will be provisionally kept in these localities while they await a resolution to the Xuan Son Dump blockade.

Soc Son District People’s Committee representatives informed the local residents of the site clearance road map and instructed Nam Son and Hong Ky commune authorities to call on the people to stop preventing the trucks. The situation was eased as residents let trucks enter again after a meeting with the committee on the afternoon of December 25.

According to the committee, the compensation will be based on new land prices which are expected to be approved by the municipal people’s council next month.

Vice chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Hung demanded a quick resolution to Nam Son dump-related issues.

Localities are asked to ensure hygiene for rubbish piles while waiting for the resumption of Nam Son landfill.

In January this year, dozens of people in Nam Son dumping ground also tried to hinder the passage of waste trucks as were angered over the long-term pollution and the local authorities’ delays in compensation for resettlement. Dtinews
