Schools in HCM City will reopen for 1st, 9th, and 12th grade pupils from December 13 for a two-week pilot period.

According to a new announcement from the HCM City People's Committee, local schools will pilot on-site classes from December 13 to December 25. After that, kindergartens will receive five-year-old kids.

In Can Gio District, students of all grades will be allowed to school from December 13.

"We will consider and adjust the resumption of schools following the results of that pilot time and the Covid-19 situation," the committee said. "We plan to allow all students to school from January 3, 2022."

Schools in HCM City have been asked to co-operate with parents and organise training for teachers and other staff on Covid-19 prevention to prepare for the reopening.

"The reopening should depend on the Covid-19 situation in different districts," the committee added. "Safety must be prioritised first."

Ho Chi Minh City is still the biggest Covid-19 epicentre in Vietnam. The city is reporting a resurgence in the number of infections shortly after easing social distancing measures. On Tuesday the city recorded 1,497 new cases, raising the total number of infections in the city to 470,458.
