Regarding the implementation of the projects on building the national database on population and issuance, production and management of chip-based ID cards of the Ministry of Public Security, the national data system on population has been officially activated and connected with ministries, agencies and local governments.

For the chip-based ID card project, the Ministry of Public Security has completed the collection of citizenship identification documents for more than 50 million eligible cases. These results are thanks to the consensus of the people and the active participation of police agencies at all levels.

However, some people told VietNamNet that they had completed the procedures for getting chip-based ID cards several months ago but they have still not received the new ID cards.

"I still have not received a chip-based ID card after more than 3 months of applying for it. It is not clear why this delay has happened," said Nam, a man from Hanoi.

Explaining the problem, Major General Pham Cong Nguyen, Director of the Police Agency or Administrative Management of Social Order (C06), Ministry of Public Security told the media that according to the first plan, the Ministry of Public Security would have issued 50 million chip-based ID cards by July 1.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the production of electronic chips in the world. The chip attached to Vietnam’s new ID cards has a high security and technical structure, and they are imported," said Major General Nguyen.

According to the official, the Ministry of Public Security is speeding up the process of printing and delivering new ID cards and it aims to deliver all ID cards by September this year.

Nearly 34 million citizens make chip-based ID cards

The Departments of Public Security in 63 provinces and cities had collected dossiers of making chip-based ID cards of 33.9 million Vietnamese citizens as of April 27, equal to 67.8 percent of the goal of 50 million cards to be issued before July 1.
