The ring was masterminded by Do Ngoc Ha, a 37-year-old resident living in Hanoi’s Long Bien District.
The investigation agency has detained Ha and a number of suspects for further investigations, said a representative of the Criminal Police Department on November 3.
According to the police, Do Ngoc Ha and Bui Hoang Son, 33 years old of Hanoi, organized gambling online through the Baccarat game, using cryptocurrency, in December 2020.
After they developed a website, Ha contacted a bookmaker of a game casino that has a server located abroad. To take part in the game, bettors were required to deposit money to convert it into cryptocurrency and then place bets on this site.
Initial investigations show that the betting system had been up and running since the beginning of October and it had attracted many members to set up approximately 3,000 accounts to participate in online gambling.
The total amount of bets on the system is more than EUR1.1 billion (equivalent to about VND30 trillion).
The investigation agency has summoned 15 others to clarify their role in the gambling ring. It has also seized 12 cars, 9 computers, more than VND1.7 billion, 104 taels of SJC gold and other things.
The case is under investigation.
