Recently, in the list of research institutions in Publons database, a new criterion was updated: the total number of studies included in the ISI Web of Science Core Collection (WOS), including sub-criteria: SCIE/ SSCI/ AHCI/ ESCI for academic journals, CPCI for conference proceedings, and BCI index for books. Based on this information, the scientific potential of some research institutions in Vietnam can be briefly reviewed as follows.
Ton Duc Thang University has 229 researchers and 4,892 research works listed in WOS Core Collection. Phenikaa has 32 research and 642 research works. The figures are 39 and 623 for Duy Tan University. All of them are private schools.
Meanwhile, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and the Hanoi National University have 80 and 59 researchers, 422 and 318 research works, respectively.
The noteworthy thing is that the number of publications in WOS Core Collection includes all the publications in the past of the researchers who are working at the agencies shown on the list, no matter which agencies were in the articles.

In addition, some characteristics of the data, such as information declaration by users may cause the data to be insufficient and are lower than in reality. Therefore, the figures should be considered to predict the scientific research potential of research institutions.
The statistics show that the state-owned universities operating under the mode of autonomy and private universities are leading in the number of scientific research works and researchers. The institutions also contributed the highest number of confirmed review reports.
Another noteworthy thing is that there are many research institutes which have research works in no way inferior to ‘parent’ agencies. The Physics Institute and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) are examples. However, the figures may be different once statistics are updated.
If compared with another recently released ranking, the Nature Index, most agencies in the top 10 research institutions in natural sciences, chemistry, life sciences, earth and environment sciences are also listed by Publons as pioneers in their fields, such as VAST, Duy Tan University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, HCM City National University, Ton Duc Thang University, and University of Natural Sciences belonging to the Hanoi National University.
When standing together, the strength of each research institution helps Vietnam improve its position internationally
In October, ISI's Global Research Report - South and East Asia, named Vietnam as the country with the fastest academic growth in South and Southeast Asia since 2009.
