EF English Proficiency Index 2019

This year’s report showed that Vietnam stood at the 52nd out of 100 countries and regions with a score of 51.57, which is considered low proficiency.     

The annual index conducted by EF Education First assesses the countries and territories based on the five levels ranging between very high to very low.

The low level means that the ability to “navigate an English-speaking country as a tourist, engage in small talk with colleagues, and understand simple emails from colleagues”.

The southeastern and Red River delta regions topped the country with the EPI, followed by the Mekong Delta and coastal northern central regions.

Hanoi took the lead nationwide in the index. The runners-up were HCM City, Danang and Haiphong cities.

In Asia, Vietnam placed at the 10th out of 25 surveyed countries and territories, a slight drop from 7th out of 21 in 2018. Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia had the highest score in the ranking in Asia.

Between 2015 and 2018, Vietnam was ranked as moderate in the index, but the country fell to very low this year.

The country stood 29th among 70 countries and territories in the list in 2015, at the 31st out of 72 in 2016, at the 34th out of 72 in 2017 and 41 out of 88 countries and territories in 2018. Dtinews
