The programmes have been organised by Hà Nội’s Education and Training Department and Hà Nội Radio and Television, aiming to help students while they are off from school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trần Đỗ Phương Ngọc, a 9th grader at Ngô Sỹ Liên Secondary School of Hoàn Kiếm District, said the English lessons were easy to understand with good examples.

“The first lesson for each subject has been summarised for the first term,” she said.

Lại Khánh Ngọc, a 12th grader at Yên Hòa High School in Cầu Giấy District, said she liked the literature lessons.

“They’re foolproof,” she said.

"I liked the teacher’s teaching methods. It helped us to remember and highlighted the important points we needed to focus on," Ngọc added.

"The teacher speak slowly and concisely so I could take in the information," she said.

The lesson was a follow-up to the one I had before schools closed, so there was no interruption due to the long absence, she said.

Ngọc also enjoyed updates on the COVID-19 situation worldwide during her English lesson.

“It makes me feel eager to learn,” she said.

Bùi Tuấn Duy, a 12th grader at Minh Quang High School in Ba Vì District, said learning via television was simple. It did not require students to have a smartphone, laptop or desktop with internet connections.

Lê Thị Trang, the mother of a 12th grader at Tiến Thịnh High School in Mê Linh District, said students in the 12th grades were worrying about the upcoming national high school exams scheduled for July 23-26.

“These lessons are necessary for them,” she said.

Trần Tuấn Thành, the father of a 9th grader at Tế Tiêu Secondary School in Mỹ Đức District, said the advantage of TV lessons was they could be re-watched. Students could double check and ask their parents for help if necessary.

Nguyễn Thu Hằng, the mother of a 9th grader in Hoàn Kiếm District, said the lessons were easy to understand.

However, Hằng said 30 minutes for a lesson was too short, and they should be 45 minutes like at school.

Working hard

Nguyễn Thị Vân Anh, deputy head of the Hà Nội Radio and Television’s Editorial Board, said the station had co-operated with the education sector to broadcast the lessons for students in 9th and 12th grades while they were off school due to COVID-19.

Parents said lessons should be available for other grades, but they did not have enough staff, Anh said.

“The producers and teachers have to work seven days per week to produce these lessons,” she added.

Vũ Đình Lâm, a teacher at Kim Liên High School in Đống Đa District, said he and his colleagues had worked with education experts from the city’s education department to arrange recording schedules and the content for each lesson.

The teaching programme for 9th and 12th graders is being broadcast at 9:15am, 2:30pm, 3:15pm and 4pm every Monday to Saturday on Hà Nội Radio and Television.

For 9th graders, English, maths and literature are aired at 9:15am on Monday and Thursday; Tuesday and Friday; Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

For 12th graders, literature, maths, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, citizenship education and English are at 2:30pm, 3:15pm and 4pm each day.

Nguyễn Đức Chung, chairman of the city’s People’s Committee, said at a recent meeting that students at all levels in the city would be off from school until March 15.

MoET requests increasing televised, online lessons amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Ministry of Education and Training has requested its provincial-level departments nationwide to increase televised and online lessons for students since all schools remain closed as part of efforts to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The education and training departments across the country must direct and instruct schools to streamline curriculum and broadcast lessons on television and the Internet so the students can study at home, the ministry said in a notice.

They were tasked to help schools select online teaching tools suitable to their conditions and at the same time ensure the quality of the lessons, the notice said, adding that the Hanoi National University of Education will provide free help to schools in this matter.

Lessons broadcast in one city or province can be shared and re-broadcast in others, it added.

The departments must inform teachers, students and their families about broadcast schedules for different subjects, which must also be reported to the ministry.

Teachers are responsible for guiding students to attend televised and online lessons and keeping close contact with their families to supervise their study on the television and Internet.

After the students go back to school, the schools are assigned to review and assess their learning outcomes.

Thua Thien-Hue offers televised lessons for students

The Thua Thien-Hue Department of Education and Training is coordinating with the provincial Radio and Television Station to offer televised lessons for Grade 12 and Grade 9 students from March 16 and March 23, respectively.

The 9th graders will learn literature, maths and English, while the 12th graders will study literature, maths, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, civics, and English.

Lessons will be available from 8:00-10:00am and 3:00-5:00 pm from Monday to Friday. Each will last for 30 minutes.

To make it easier for students to access lessons, contents of all subjects will be saved on the portals of the province and the education and training department as well as the Radio and Television Station’s website so that they can review the lessons at any time.

According to the provincial Department of Education and Training, offering televised lessons is one of the measures the province is taking to ease impacts of school closures due to the acute respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

As of March 12, the country had reported 44 cases of COVID-19. Of the figure, 16 had made a complete recovery and been discharged from hospital.— VNS/VNA
