VietNamNet Bridge – Lien Thanh fish sauce, Bich Chi powder, Thong Nhat match ... used to be the popular brands of Vietnam in the past and until now they are still favored by many Vietnamese consumers.
1. Lien Thanh fish sauce: This brand is over 100 years old. In 1906, in response to the Duy Tan movement of Phan Chu Trinh, Lien Thanh Company was founded in Phan Thiet by patriotic scholars. Through ups and downs, the famous brand disappeared for a period of time and reappeared in 1997. 2. Co Ba soap: In 1932, Mr. Truong Van Ben, a famous merchant in South Vietnam, opened a soap factory named Vietnam Soap. He used the image of Miss Ba, a southern girl, as the ambassador for the product. The Vietnamese soap defeated Marseille Soap imported from France. It was widely used in Laos, Cambodia, Hong Kong and was exported to some countries colonized by France. However, after joining with P&G, Co Ba soap stopped working. Recently, Phuong Dong JSC decided to revive this brand. 3. Bich Chi unpolished rice powder: This was the leading rice powder brand for babies in Vietnam in the 60s-90s. The height of the Bich Chi powder was in 1970-1975 when it was promoted and widely distributed in major markets such as Ho Chi Minh City, the western provinces and the central region. To date, this brand is still popular for many people but it cannot compete with giants like Nestle, Vinamilk, ... 4. Truc Bach Beer: In 1957 the Vietnam Beer Factory began operational with the name of Hanoi Brewery. On 15/8/1958, the first beer products were produced, named Truc Bach. In the '80s, Truc Bach beer was a premium product beyond the people's financial ability, so Truc Bach beer product was ceased. In 2010, Habeco resumed the brand Truc Bach. 5. Lan Hao cosmetics: Bo Ket shampoo and Lan Hao cosmetics of Thorakao used to be very popular brands in Vietnam. In 1968, Thorakao products were widely sold throughout South Vietnam. Thorakao had branches in Cambodia and provided its products to Southeast Asia. At present, these products cannot compete with foreign products in Vietnam. They are mainly exported to Cambodia.
6. Da Lan Toothpaste: In the years 1993-1994, Da Lan toothpaste brand was very famous and it accounted for nearly 70% of the market share. But then, Mr. Trinh Thanh Nhon - who created this brand - sold it for Colgate Palmolive for $3 million. Da Lan existed only for three months before the Colgate appeared. In 2009, Da Lan was restored by Mr. Nhon and the brand is owned by the International Cosmetic Company (ICC).
7. Hynos Toothpaste: Many Saigonese who were born and grew up in the 20th century knew and remembered Hynos toothpaste. In 2007, P/S JSC started restoring Hynos. This product was mainly sold in rural areas but the turnover was low. This brand has appeared at some supermarkets but has yet to return to its heyday.
8. Gold Star balm: In the 90s, all Vietnamese families used Gold Star balm. Currently, this product is still highly appreciated by customers. On eBay, a Gold Star balm box is offered for VND50,000-VND70,000 ($2.5-3), 30 times more expensive than the original selling price in Vietnam. This product received good feedback and is often sold out on websites such as eBay or Amazon.
9. Miliket instant noodle: Dubbed "King of instant noodles" in the 90s, Miliket of Colusa Food JSC absolutely dominated the market. This is a familiar noodle brand for generations of Vietnamese. So far, Miliket is still the favorite of a part of Vietnamese consumers.
10. Thong Nhat match: This is a product of Thong Nhat Match JSC. When the lighter was not common, it was indispensable in daily life of the Vietnamese people. And now, it is still widely used throughout the country. |
