On May 31, Nokia and VNPT announced their cooperation program to implement the first 10 Gb/s fiber optic broadband infrastructure in Vietnam.
In the first phase, VNPT will connect 10,000 households and businesses. Nokia will provide optical access nodes for VNPT switchboards and optical modems to connect customers' homes.
Broadband fiber optic technology is being rapidly deployed in Vietnam. In September 2021, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced the national digital transformation program, with the goal of providing fiber-optic Internet infrastructure connection to 80% of households and 100% of communes by 2025.
According to a report on Vietnamese telecommunications network operators conducted by Global Data, VNPT took the lead with 39.5% of market share in 2022.
With this new technology, VNPT can provide customers with a full choice of speeds up to 10 Gb/s on existing infrastructure without the need to install new fiber optic cables.
Vietnam's fixed broadband Internet market is a race among three network operators: VNPT, Viettel, and FPT.
Last year, VNPT and Nokia signed a cooperation agreement on 5G private radio networks and solutions for smart ports and smart airports. With support from Nokia, VNPT has launched a commercial trial 5G network in Hanoi, with 5G download speeds of 1.2Gbps.
