VietNamNet Bridge – More than than 6,200 people were hospitalized during the Lunar New Year holiday (Tet) and 15 people died from injuries received from physical fighting, reported the Ministry of Health.

During the holiday, the Vietnam-Germany Hospital in Hanoi admitted several people each day who had been involved in fights. On the afternoon of February 23, the reporter saw at least two injured people hospitalized due to fighting.

One of them was a 54-year-old man from the northern port city of Quang Ninh, who suffered a serious brain injury, and another was a 22-year-old man from Bac Giang province. Both of them were injured in fighting after parties.

A nurse at the hospital, Nguyen Ngoc Hoi, said this year the number of patients who were injured due to fights had increased. Most of them were young men involved in fighting after drinking or petty conflicts. Many patients had been involved in fights with their friends.

Hoi said on the morning of the first day of the lunar year, the hospital admitted a 21-year-old man from Thai Binh province with a deep stab wound on his head, caused by his close friend. The patient’s family said the two friends fought after a party on New Year’s Eve.

Dr Nguyen Thanh Thai, head of the Plastic Surgery Ward of the Vietnam - Cuba Hospital in Hanoi, said the hospital received many victims of violence over Tet holiday.

The majority of patients had knife wounds or had been hit by beer bottles, wine bottles, or sticks. Most of the wounds were on the head, arms or shoulders.

In HCM City, Cho Ray Hospital treated 71 victims of violence from February 15 to 22. Many of them had been injured after drinking.

According to the 115 Emergency Center in HCM City, from February 15 to 22, the city’s hospitals received 460 victims of violence.

Also, during this period, 46 people were hospitalized due to firecracker accidents, although firecrackers have been banned in Vietnam for decades.
