VietNamNet Bridge – The virus surveillance system of BKAV, a well known network security solution provider in Vietnam, said that about 64.2 million computers in Vietnam were infected with viruses in 2011, which meant that 175,000 computers got viruses every day.

More attacks reported

BKAV said that 39,000 new viruses appeared in 2011, while W32.Sality.PE is believed to be the most widespread with 4.2 million computers getting infected with this kind of virus. Especially, BKAV has warned that it is not only the biggest culprit in 2011, but may also affect millions of computers in the time to come.

However, there is a strange thing about this kind of virus. Though having affected to millions of computers, BKAV’s experts, after a long period of supervising the virus, said that the virus has been sitting quiet, while it has not activated destructive activities, such as stealing or destroying data.

According to the experts, it may happen that an organization, or even a nation backs the virus network, while it is still unclear about their intention. Therefore, BKAV has advised computer users nationwide to scan their computers with the anti-virus software products using the technologies allowing to kill metamorphic viruses.

2011 was also the year that witnessed a lot of attacks on Internet. Every month, BKAV received more than 30 reports about fraudulence via Yahoo Messenger. Not only Yahoo, but Facebook, the biggest social network in the world, has also become the tool for hackers to make the corrupt use to make dwindling.

In late 2011, BKAV recognized the appearance of the viruses which, for the first time, were spread out through Facebook chat. Besides, a lot of cases, where crimes acted as famous persons to make dwindling on the environment of social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, have been reported.

2250 websites of Vietnamese agencies and enterprises were hacked in 2011. This means that over 100 websites were hacked every month. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There might be a lot of quiet attacks that the victims did not know about them.

In 2011, when giving support to some agencies, whose websites were hacked, BKAV discovered that some viruses had been installed at the systems for a long time already. The viruses carried out undercover activities by stealing important documents, and then sending back to the hackers’ servers.

Vietnam is the fertile land for hackers

Vietnam is one of the countries which have the fastest Internet growth rate in the world. According to the Ministry of Information and Communication, the number of Internet subscribers in Vietnam has reached 31 million, or 35 percent of the population.

Most of the enterprises and organizations have network systems and websites to introduce their products and popularize their brands and to serve online payment.

“Though this should be seen as the good news, this could be the favorable environment for hackers to attack,” Nguyen Viet The, Director of the Informatics Agency of the Ministry of Public Security, noted.

The Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team VNCERT has found out that 54 percent of organizations in Vietnam do not have standardized procedures to respond to the attacks. This shows that Vietnamese institutions prove to be in passive voice when dealing with Internet crimes.

The said that botnet has become a service on sale which has been offered to sell on Internet. The tools for DoS attacks have been offered with decreasing prices.

BKAV has said that the year 2012 may witness the boom of viruses on mobile phones, while metamorphic viruses will continue to spread.
