VietNamNet Bridge – The People’s Court of Nam Tra My District in the central province of Quang Nam on October 24 received the petition of 18 families in hamlet 6, Tra Don commune against the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) Group.
These families sued the State-owned group for its construction of Song Tranh 2 hydro-power plant in Tra Doc commune, Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province that cause flood to their entire land. They asked EVN to stop storing water in Song Tranh 2 reservoir.

Petitioners said that though negotiation on resettlement and compensation between them and Song Tranh 2 power plant project board was not finalized, the project was implemented and causing heavy losses for 18 families. Because of the Song Tranh 2 power plant, their houses and land are completely flooded. They have to live in hired rooms.

Earlier, these households did not accept compensation offered by Song Tranh 2 project and they lodged a petition on administrative procedures against the Nam Tra My commune People’s Committee to the local court on October 5.

Hydro-power projects are now a hot topic of discussion in Vietnam. Hydro-power is an important source of electricity for the country but hydro-power plants pose threats to the enviroment.
