The Thanh Thanh Dat 99 cargo ship, weighing 23,000 tons, lost steering control and drifted into the coastal waters of Thanh Hoa Province after departing from Ninh Binh as Storm No. 5 made landfall.
Speaking with VietNamNet, Tran Thi Hue, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Tien Trang commune in Quang Xuong District, confirmed that the large vessel had become stranded just off the local shoreline.
According to initial reports, the Thanh Thanh Dat 99, measuring 151 meters in length and 26 meters in width, had been anchored in Ninh Binh. On the evening of August 25, during a lull in the storm, the ship attempted to sail to Nghi Son Port in Thanh Hoa to load cargo. However, it lost steering and drifted into the shoreline of Binh village, Tien Trang commune.
The ship is currently stranded just under 100 meters from shore and remains immobile.
Chairwoman Hue confirmed that there were 19 people onboard, including the captain and 18 crew members. Fortunately, all are safe and in stable condition.
“We have been on standby throughout the night to monitor the situation and provide support should the crew issue a distress signal or encounter any emergency. The local authorities have reported the incident to higher levels,” she said.
