Tran Trong Toan, head of the department’s Environmental Protection Division, said the work was completed on Monday morning. Workers recovered 26 tonnes of hydrochloric acid from the vessel, contained in 20 plastic buckets.

Toan said after the ship floundered, the buckets containing the chemical were covered, and all were removed without acid leaking into the river.

The ship would soon be salvaged, he said.

At 4pm on November 11, the ship was loading cargo at Nhat Nam Domestic Port in Bien Hoa City’s An Binh Ward when its hull was punctured, causing water to flood the vessel.

After being notified of the incident, officers began to empty the ship during the night.
