300-year-old Thanh Tien paper flower making village busy ahead of Tet
Artisans based in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue’s 300-year-old Thanh Tien craft village are hurrying to make paper flowers as the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet, approaches.
Thanh Tien craft village in Phu Vang district is located on the southern bank of the Huong (Perfume) River. Over the course of its 300-year history, the village is one of the main tourist destinations in Hue City.
Local villagers make paper flowers as an offering to their ancestors. Nowadays, their products have become decorative items, particularly on Tet, the country’s biggest traditional festival.
Making paper lotus flowers requires the most intricate craftsmanship, with several households in the area capable of producing the sophisticated products.
The village’s products have been displayed at Hue festivals, Ao Dai festivals, and cultural events, as well as exported to many countries such as the United States, France, and Japan.
The price of the paper flowers ranges from VND5,000 for a pair of simple flowers such as roses, daisies, and orchids up to VND20,000 for a lotus. (Photo: Baovanhoa.vn)
As the work requires a lot of time, meticulousness, and skill, a veteran craftsman can make only 15 to 20 paper flowers a day. (Photo: Baovanhoa.vn)
All of the steps to make paper flowers are completed manually, which is a time-consuming process. It therefore requires the meticulous skills of artisans to make the flowers lifelike. (Photo: Baovanhoa.vn)
