VietNamNet Bridge – The tree (diospyros decandra lour), which is located in the central province of Thua Thien Hue, was accredited as “Tree of Heritage” by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment on November 5.

Document shows that the tree was planted by Than Van family in 1698 at the family’s temple in Duong Xuan Ha Village in Hue City.

The ancient tree is 25m tall with a trunk diameter of 4.2 meters.

It has grown well and produces fragrant orange-red fruits every summer, even though its trunk was pierced by shrapnel from a bomb shell in 1968.

This is the first ancient tree in Hue that is recognized as Tree of Heritage.

Last month, the association honored nine 700-year-old trees in Hanoi as Trees of Heritage”.

The title is awarded to honor ancient trees that are at least 100 years old and that bear historical and cultural values attached to the development of local regions.

This is an activity supporting the International Year for Biodiversity 2010.
