The list compiled by the Metrics group of professors Jeroen Baas, Kevin Boyack, and John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University in the United States was recently published in the PLoS Biology Journal.
Most notably, Vietnam has two scientists - Le Hoang Son and Nguyen Dinh Duc of the Vietnam National University – Hanoi - featured in the top 10,000, with the pair ranking 5,816th and 7,454th, respectively.
2022 marks Duc and Son ranked in the top 10,000 for the fourth consecutive year.
The 2022 list also saw three Vietnamese scientists drop out of the top 10,000 compared to the 2001 lilst.
The rankings make use of Scopus's database which runs from 1960 up to August of this year in order to find the top 100,000 most influential scientists out of more than seven million.
The criteria consist of factors such as the influence index in the scientific world, the total number of citations, the Hirsch h-index, the Schreiber HM-index, the number of citations for articles published as sole author, and the number of citations for articles as the lead and final authors.
Scientists are also classified into 22 fields and 176 sub-fields. Field- and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists who have published at least five papers.
