Venerable Thich Thanh Phong of Vinh Nghiem Pagoda said at a press conference yesterday that the number of participants was increasing since they can still register on the pagoda website.

The Requiem will be held to express pity for the unfortunate people who died in traffic accidents and to share grief with their families, said Venerable Thich Thanh Phong.

According to Khuat Viet Hung, the deputy chairman of the Vietnam Traffic Safety Committee, the Requiem is also an opportunity to call on people to raise awareness of the observance of laws to ensure traffic safety.

Statistics from the National Traffic Safety Committee show that every day 25 people in Vietnam leave their homes and never return because of traffic accidents. At the same time, dozens of families are torn apart because of traffic accidents.

The National Traffic Safety Committee will also hold a memorial service for victims of traffic accidents at the Hanoi Friendship Cultural Palace. The activities are organized in response to the "World Day for Commemoration of Victims of Traffic Accidents" initiated by the United Nations.
