An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the sea off the east coast of Honshu Japan at 4:32 a.m. Monday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter, with a depth of 40 km, was monitored at about 39.0 degrees north latitude and 142.1 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
