Ten national records were set in diving at the ongoing 7th National Games in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

The diving competition took place from December 5-9, with 119 athletes vying for 32 medal sets in scuba, snorkeling, breath-hold diving and snorkeling relay.

Bui Vuong Duy Anh from Ho Chi Minh City broke the women’s 400m scuba old record of 3’15”35 with 3’12”71 while Vo Thi Kieu from the central province of Quang Binh made a new record of 13’38”96 in the women’s 1,500m snorkeling event, which was previously set at 14’9”33.

Ho Chi Minh City topped the sport’s medal tally with 10 golds, seven silvers and two bronzes. It was followed by Hanoi with four golds, 10 silvers and six bronzes, and central Thanh Hoa province, 4 golds, three silvers and two bronzes.

Launched in 1990, the Vietnam National Games is organised every four years.

This year’s event, held from December 6-16, attracts the participation of nearly 7,500 athletes from cities, provinces and public security and military teams competing in 36 sports.

Archer Cuong sets new national games record

Archer Nguyen Tien Cuong of Ha Noi broke national record in the men's 50m three-stringed bow with 352 points at the ongoing National Sports Games in the northern port city of Hai Phong yesterday.

Cuong's teammate Vu Viet Anh and Ngo Phi Khoa of Soc Trang were the runners-up with the same score of 341 points.

The 26-year-old athlete broke another national record in the men's 70m three-stringed bow with 353 points on Tuesday.

The four-day rowing event concluded yesterday. Ha Noi finished top with seven golds, one silver and two bronzes. Hai Duong finished second with five golds, four silvers and one bronze, while Thai Binh came third with three golds, one silver and one bronze.

In the men's billiards, Tat Duy Kien of HCM City defeated Luu Minh Phuc of Binh Duong to win gold in the 9-ball category.

Minh wins his first stage, Tam leads tour

Le Nguyet Minh won his first stage of the Trans-Viet cycling tournament while Nguyen Thanh Tam emerged the tour leader at the end of the seventh stage yesterday.

Minh, from Vinamit HCM City, achieved a solo finish, traversing the 160km distance from Dong Ha City of Quang Tri Province to Quang Binh Province, garnering a time of 4hrs 11.15min.

During the competition, Minh faced no difficulty, leaving his rivals far behind to reach the finish line alone.

Green jersey Do Anh Tuan of Domesco Dong Thap 1 came second, followed by Le Van Dong of VTV Can Tho. Tam of Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang was among the cyclists included in the first group of peloton. His successful performance was enough to push him to the tour's top spot, posting a total time of 21:42.28.

Le Ngoc Son of Domesco Dong Thap 1 was close behind, lagging by just 27 seconds. Ariya Phounsanath from Laos' CNN placed attained a time of 21:42.70.
