The accident happened at 03:55 at a crossroad leading to Tam Hiep port of Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam province, according to a local official.

A van with many people on board collided with a container truck at the cross road, confirmed Nguyen Hong Quang, deputy head of the Quang Nam provincial administration.

The van was transporting people from Quang Ngai province to Hue city for medical examination, said Quang.

The van turned turtle, with six people being killed at the scene, while two passengers who were among the injured died on the way to hospital, said the official.

Other injured passengers were immediately brought to a nearby hospital for emergency examination and treatment, he said.

It is not clear how many people were travelling on the van when the accident happened.

The police launched investigations into the cause of the accident.

Seven of the eight people killed in Quang Nam traffic accident identified

Seven of the eight people who died in the coach-tractor crash early Tuesday morning in Quang Nam have been identified.

The seven victims were between 24 to 57 years old. They were all from the neighbouring Quang Ngãi Province and were on their way to Hue for medical treatment.

Six people died at the scene of the crash and two more passed away after being transferred to hospital. Of the 12 other injured people who were hospitalised, three are in critical condition.

The 16-seater coach, the driver of which has yet to be identified, was carrying 21 people from Nghia Phu, Nghia An and Nghia Ha communes in Quang Ngai City to Hue for medical treatment. It crashed with a tractor being driven by a 41-year-old from Trường Hải Bridge to a port.

According to the Viet Nam Road Department, the accident occurred at 3:41am on Tuesday. The coach was travelling at a speed of 69 km/h at 3:40am, and the tractor at 30 km/h.

According to Nghia Ha authorities, the coach often set off early from Quang Ngai and planned to return the same day.

The distance from Quang Ngai to Hue is about 230km.

PM urges investigation into tragic Quang Nam traffic accident

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged concerned agencies to launch an investigation into a road traffic accident in the central province of Quang Nam, that killed at least eight people.

The accident occurred at 3:55 this morning, February 14, at a crossroad leading to Tam Hiep Port in Quang Nam’s Nui Thanh District when a minibus collided with a container truck.

As a result, six people were instantly killed, while another two died on the way to hospital.

The minibus was carrying the passengers from Quang Ngai to Hue for medical examinations.

Currently, other 13 injured people are staying at a local hospital for treatment.

Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung led a working group at the scene.

Right after being informed of the case, the prime minister offered his deep condolences to the families of the victims. He asked concerned units to provide the best treatment for the injured people.
