Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Vietnam four times, each marking an important milestone in the relationship between the two countries.
From June 19-20, Putin will pay a State visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, making this his fifth visit as President.
The first visit took place from February 28 to March 2, 2001, one year after Putin assumed leadership of Russia. Invited by President Tran Duc Luong, Putin's official friendly visit resulted in the issuance of a Joint Statement on the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.
Notable activities included visits to the Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, the Temple of Literature, and meetings with Vietnamese alumni of Russian institutions.
Reflecting on his visit to Uncle Ho's Stilt House, Putin wrote: "I sincerely got to know the life of the great teacher of the Vietnamese people - a person whose name has remained in world history."

The second visit was in November 2006, at the invitation of President Nguyen Minh Triet. Putin attended the 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
The two Presidents signed a "Joint Statement on continued cooperation in geological exploration and oil and gas exploitation." He also met with General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
In 2013, President Truong Tan Sang invited Putin for a State visit on November 12. This was the first State visit to Vietnam by Putin.
The visit followed the signing ceremony of the Minutes of Handover for the first submarine named “Hanoi” from Russia to Vietnam.
Putin's itinerary included talks with President Truong Tan Sang, meetings with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and the signing of cooperation documents in politics, defense, trade, and energy.
The fourth visit occurred on November 10, 2017, when Putin attended the APEC Summit in Da Nang. During his visit, he had a bilateral meeting with President Tran Dai Quang.
At that time, Putin expressed his condolences for the damage caused by storm No. 12 and praised Vietnam's role as the APEC host in 2017.
The two leaders issued a Joint Statement on cooperation in international information security.
Putin's upcoming visit from June 19-20, 2024, marks his second State visit and fifth overall visit to Vietnam. This visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Treaty on the Basic Principles of Friendship between Vietnam and Russia (1994-2024), reflecting the deep-rooted and evolving partnership between the two nations.Tran Thuong
