VietNamNet Bridge - In the reservoir of Thac Ba hydroelectric plant in Yen Bai province has a special rehabilitation center that has existed for more than two decades. Being separated from the mainland, the only way to get there is to take a boat trip across the vast lake.
This rehabilitation center was founded in 1992. It currently has 500 members, who are struggling to give up drugs.
Before being admitted to the center, drug addicts are examined to define their situation. They will then be treated dependence on drugs in about 15 days.
Thanks to the help of medical staff, drug addicts can quickly overcome this phase. However, this is only the first challenge in a detoxification process lasting several months.
After a period of detoxification, addicts must undergo a long period of health recovery and psychological treatment.
A day starts at around 6am. Addicts wake up for doing morning exercise and having breakfast before working. At 8 am, a group of addicts get on the boat to islands in the lake to cut grass.
The center applies the autonomy model. Some exemplary members are assigned to support others.
The grass is used to feed the center’s cattle, which is enough to supply 20 percent of meat for the center’s 600 members.
The center also has 8,000 m2 of land to grow vegetables, meeting 100% of vegetable needs. Addicts can learn construction, carpentry, rattan and bamboo product making at vocational classes.
Completely isolated from the outside world creates the special advantages for the rehabilitation center.
After work, addicts can play sports in late afternoon. The monthly fees for rehabilitation is only VND900,000/month ($43).
