They have also contributed to creating a signature image for the region’s tourism. It is not uncommon to see elephants carrying tourists on their backs, strolling through the narrow dirt tracks of small villages that have become tourist attractions.

But one local man last week decided to do something unusual: taking a student to school on the back of an elephant.

Netizens were treated to the spectacular sight when photos and videos of the trio were posted on the internet. The man, in what seems to be a forest ranger uniform and two bamboo poles in his hands, rode an elephant through a wide concrete road alongside motorbikes. The student sat behind him in his school uniform, wearing his backpack and a blue helmet – yes, a helmet – placing his hands on the elephant as if to keep himself balance.

“He looks as grand as a god,” one site commented on the man’s appearance and his means of transportation.

Grand indeed, but oblivious to traffic safety. And we hope he remembered to buy insurance for his unique “vehicle”.
