Renowned for its effectiveness against low-altitude targets, the 9K35 Strela-10 is often referred to as the "killer" missile complex. Its advanced capabilities enable it to detect, track, and neutralize a variety of airborne threats, ensuring the security and safety of one of Vietnam's busiest airports.

The personnel operating the A89 missile complex are highly skilled and trained to maintain constant vigilance. Their readiness and expertise are critical in ensuring that the airspace remains protected from potential threats.

During routine drills, Battalion 172 simulates hypothetical scenarios to enhance combat readiness. In one such scenario, the unit detects an unidentified aerial object intruding into the protected airspace without prior notification or forecast.

Promptly responding to the alarm signal, officers and soldiers swiftly assume combat-ready positions, closely monitoring the movements of the unidentified aircraft.

With remarkable efficiency, the combat crew of the A89 (9k35 Strela-10) low-altitude surface-to-air missile complex swiftly maneuvers into combat formation. The deployment of the 72kg missiles onto the weapon rack by dedicated personnel ensures readiness for immediate action upon command.

Within minutes, the operating crew stands poised to deploy equipment to the fortified area, with the vehicle commander maintaining communication with the Command Center while the gunner diligently tracks the target.

Comprising a missile launcher, radar, and optical/infrared control equipment mounted on the MT-LB light amphibious vehicle chassis, the complex boasts missiles with an effective range of up to 5km, covering altitudes from 25m to 3.5km, poised in ready-to-fire mode within launch and storage tubes.

Upon receiving directives from the Command Center, the gunner initiates the missile launch, effectively neutralizing the target.

Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Viet, Battalion Commander of Battalion 172, underscores the unit's focus on comprehensive training to ensure seamless and effective combat coordination. Training encompasses individual and group drills, fostering close collaboration between vehicle and Command Center crews.

"Beyond technical proficiency, our training regimen also emphasizes psychological resilience and physical endurance, ensuring soldiers adapt adeptly to diverse weather conditions," remarked Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Viet.

Moreover, Battalion 172 is equipped with specialized weaponry and equipment tailored to counter UAVs and intrusive aircraft, further fortifying the defense of Noi Bai airport's airspace.
