VietNamNet Bridge – Nearly 17,300 people were hospitalised for injuries suffered in road accidents during three days of the Lunar New Year holiday from Saturday to Monday, a 113 per cent increase year-on-year.

Nearly 1,930 of them suffered head injuries and more than 180 underwent surgery.

Ninety-eight people were hospitalised for injuries from firecracker explosions, double the number year-on-year. No deaths were reported.

About 1,970 people were hospitalised after getting injured in fights, an 83 per cent fall year-on-year. Ten of them died.

There were 104 road accidents across the country from Sunday to yesterday, in which 64 people died and 98 were injured, the National Traffic Safety Committee said.

Associate Professor Luong Ngoc Khue, director of the Medical Services Administration under the health ministry, asked medical stations and hospitals across the country to ensure the examination and treatment of patients as well as hospital security during the remaining days of the holiday.

Medical stations must have people on duty during the holiday, including leaders, doctors and nurses, administrative workers and security guards. The people on duty must be ready to deal with cases of mass food poisoning and accidents and should prevent shortage of medicines, blood and other medical necessities.

Earlier, the health ministry set up six inspection teams to check the work of 52 medical stations across the country to ensure health examination and treatment quality during the holiday.
