Xinhua reporters saw heavy smoke billowing at the Pucheng Neifu Airport, where the air show was being staged.
The air show is continuing, Xinhua reporters said.
The fighter jet FBC-1, also known as a Flying Leopard, was manufactured by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corp.
The three-day air show that opened on Friday is part of the China International General Aviation Convention being held in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi.
Video footage broadcast by China Central Television (CCTV) showed that the pilot was ejected and parachuted shortly before the fighter jet nose-dived to the ground and exploded.
