VietNamNet Bridge – The President on August 29, declared amnesty for more than 10,000 prisoners on the occasion of the National Day (September 2).


Specifically, President Truong Tan Sang signed the amnesty declaration for 10,244 prisoners and 291 others who are about to go to jail.

Of these prisoners, there are 11 foreigners (four Chinese, three Lao, and one American, one Indian, one Canadian and one Australian) and five prisoners who committed crimes prejudicial to national security, said lieutenant general Le Quy Vuong, Deputy Minister of Public Security.

Foreign prisoners who enjoy amnesty are those who committed crimes associated to social order.

There are 335 people committing economic-related crimes and 111 committing corruption and embezzlement crimes. Of them, 150 were officials.

Vice chair of the President’s Office – Giang Son, said that the amnesty procedures was implemented seriously, publicly and democratically. A consultative council met to consider each proposed case and then submitted the list to the President for consideration and approval.

There are more than 100,000 prisoners at prisons in Vietnam.
