The money is needed for filling a crater in the riverbank in Cho Moi District’s My Hoi Dong Commune to prevent further landslides, building a resettlement area for people moved out of vulnerable areas, repairing infrastructure and relocating a primary school.

The province has also asked the Government to frame housing policies to enable the relocation of 20,000 households living in landslide-prone areas in the next five years.

On April 22 a 70m-section of the riverbank slid into the water pulling down 14 houses and forcing many people to evacuate.

It has left a crater 380m long, 120m wide and 42m deep and caused estimated losses of VND9 billion ($396,400).

In Dong Thap Province, on April 28 the People’s Committee declared a state of emergency in Thanh Binh District where possible landslides threaten hundreds of households.

Since the beginning of April landslides have occurred along a 210m section of the Tien River in the district’s Binh Thanh Commune.

Provincial authorities urged the district to alert the public, put up warning signs at the site of the landslide and help people evacuate.

The province’s agriculture and rural development and natural resources and environment departments were ordered to make and report plans to deal with the disaster to seek further support from the Government.
