VietNamNet Bridge - At the Arena Grand Prix in the US, Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien broke the standard to attend the world championships in Barcelona this year.
Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien.
At the event, Anh Vien ranked fifth in the women’s 200m backstroke, with 2 minutes 14 seconds 86. This record exceeds the standard B (2 minutes 15 seconds 68) of the world championships so Vien qualifies for the tournament. However, this achievement is still too far from the standard A (2 minutes 11 seconds 09).
Anh Vien’s previous records are better, with 2 minutes 14 seconds 84 at the Southeast Asia Championships 2012, 2 minutes 13 seconds 35 at the 2012 Olympics and 2 minutes 12 seconds 47 at the Asian Championships 2012.
She also passed the standard B for the women’s 400m individual medley with 4 minutes 50 seconds record 83, nearly 4 seconds less than the standard B (4 minutes 54 seconds 49).
According to regulations, each country can only select up to one swimmer who breaks the standard B for each event. For Vietnam, it is very tough to find another female swimmer who can break the standard B so Anh Vien will be certainly Vietnam’s representative at the 2013 world championships.
