A roadside bomb exploded Wednesday in the vicinity of the UN observers' convoy heading to the southern Syrian province of Daraa, the UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan's spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

There were no casualties among the observers, but several Syrian soldiers were injured and taken to hospital, said Ahmad Fawzi in a statement.

"General Mood told reporters accompanying his convoy that this was an example of what the Syrian people were suffering on a daily basis and that all forms of violence must stop," Fawzi said.

About 40 UN observers are on the ground in Syria to monitor the ceasefire between Syrian government and opposition troops.

Annan said Tuesday the total 300 observers will be on the ground in Syria by the end of May.
